Biography: 

Dato’ Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak is Professor of Politics and International Studies. He is currently Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia and has been in the position since June 2010. He has written several books and published numerous articles in local and international journals and newspapers. One of his published work entitled Politik dan Pemerintahan Negara (Politics and National Governance) has become essential reading in local institutions of higher learning. Latest, his book entitled The Politics of Bangsa Malaysia, published in 2014, has received a warm welcome and high demand. Dato’ Seri is an expert in Malaysian and Southeast Asian politics, and as a well-known prolific writer, he has been much sought after by both the local and foreign print and electronic media for his political analyses and commentaries about domestic and international affairs. Despite his busy schedule, Dato’ Seri is the founding President of the Association of International Studies (Malaysia), as well as Chief Editor of the Journal of International Studies (Malaysia). He has been Visiting Professor at several universities including the University of Paris, University of Le Havre, France, and a number of universities in Indonesia.

Dato’ Seri has also been instrumental in not only getting the UUM-BSRU strategic partnership underway but also in strengthening bilateral relations in education between Malaysia and the Kingdom of Thailand. In recognition of his contributions, the BSRU Council committee conferred him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.

In recognition of his immense contributions and service to the community and nation, Dato’ Seri was awarded several honorific titles including the Darjah Gemilang Pangkuan Negeri (D.G.P.N) which carries the title Dato’ Seri by His Excellency the Governor of Penang in September 2015; Darjah Gemilang Seri Mahkota Kedah (DGMK) which carries the title Dato’ Wira by His Royal Highness The Sultan of Kedah in 2014; the Darjah Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN) which carries the title Datuk by SPB Yang Di-Pertuan Agong in 2013; Darjah Setia Diraja Kedah (DSDK) which carries the title Dato’ by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kedah in 2011; the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) which carries the title Datuk by His Excellency the Governor of Penang in 2012; and the Ahli Mahkota Kedah (AMK) and Bintang Kebaktian Masyarakat (BKM) also from His Royal Highness the Sultan of Kedah.
